Troop 17 and the principles of Scouting will bring you:

Challenging Adventures

Troop 17 provides opportunities for scouts of all ages to participate in outings that offer a variety of adventures to allow them to explore their interests and challenge themselves! From rappelling down mountains, navigating a cave, hiking through streams, and camping in all seasons and terrains.

Leadership

Scouting offers youth many opportunities to develop leadership skills that they will use throughout their lifetime, at home and in their career. Young scouts can learn the basics of leadership as a Patrol Leader and continue to hone their skills as an older youth leading the troop as Senior Patrol Leader. Leadership in Troop 17 is valued, and we offer our  youth a chance to refine their skills through attending National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) and we recognize their dedication with the Troop 17 Prusik award.

Independence

One of the challenges all youth must face is developing a sense of personal management and self-reliance. Scouting allows the youth opportunities to become an independent person through rank advancement, earning merit badges, and participating in wilderness adventures with the assistance of youth leadership and adult mentors.

Team Building

Learning how to function in a team is an integral part of society, be it in family, education, sports, or career. Scouting offers youth the chance to be a member of a team in which they learn to lead, they learn to rely on others, and they learn to let others rely on them. As a member of a patrol, scouts learn how to use each other’s strengths and overcome weaknesses through participating in patrol meetings, patrol challenges, and camping as a patrol. Adult leaders also have a chance to develop and hone their team building skills through leadership training found through Wood Badge.

Achievement

Throughout their time in Troop 17, personal achievement is recognized through tangible items such as patches, pins, and awards which are presented to the youth for their dedication to advancement in front of their peers and family at quarterly ceremonies called the Court of Honor. Personal achievement is found through rank advancement, community service, and leadership.

Communication

Involvement in scouting can allow a youth to step out of their comfort zone and into the limelight! Scouts of all ages have the opportunity to develop basic skills of communication through as a patrol leader, through rank advancement as they communicate with the adult leaders, as well as advanced forms of communication such as public speaking, emceeing a campfire program, serving as a troop instructor, or  contacting a non-profit organization to offer their service as a volunteer.
